Two girls who train at the Hunslet Club and are members of
The Cassidy School of Irish Dancing, have qualified for the Irish
Dance World Championships in Philadelphia, USA in April.
Shannon Adamson, age 13 and Megan Kelly-Wright, age 12 competed
against 39 other girls in their age groups at the North West
Regional Qualifying, held in Southport. Both girls will compete
in Philadelphia in April. Shannon finished 3rd and Megan 7th in
their age groups.
The girls tutor, Mary Wright said "I am extremely proud of
both girls and all the dancers that competed in Southport and
overall, we had some great results all weekend. Both girls have
worked very hard and are a pleasure to teach, their enthusiasm and
dedication shone through on the day."
The girls are really looking forward to the competition,
says Megan "I danced my best after lots of practice for the
hardest competition I’ve ever done, I was so surprised and
shocked to go through.” Shannon adds “I couldn’t believe it!
I was so nervous and can’t wait to go, I’m really looking
forward to it."
The girl’s parents’ are amazed at their achievement so far.
"She’s been dancing since she was 3 and we’re so thrilled at
what she has done.” said Megan’s mum Sarah.“ It’s also meant a
lot to Shannon’s father Paddy. “Seeing her qualify for the world
championships was the most emotional experience and the first
time I’ve cried since seeing my children born. I now just want
to see them do themselves proud."
Says Dennis Robbins, Chief Executive of the Hunslet Club
"Everyone here is delighted about what these girls have
achieved, they along with everyone who learn dancing at the
Club demonstrate that there is some amazing talent to be
found in young people of South Leeds."
The Club is now appealing for funds to pay for their
flights and accommodation, anybody wishing to help should
contact Funding Officer Jason Slack on
or 0113 2716489.
Since qualifying, the girls have attracted the attention
of the media and danced live on BBC Look North and appeared
