Under 13s kick off new season in fine style

Hunslet Club Parkside u13s 34 v 8 Dewsbury Moor u13s

Saturday 4th March, Hunslet Club Parkside, Beza Street

The under 13s opened the new season with an excellent victory against Dewsbury Moor on Saturday morning, winning by 34-8 in the late winter sunshine.

On a weekend where many Yorkshire Junior and Youth League matches were called off due to waterlogged pitches the Beza Street ground was in good condition despite the heavy rainfall of the previous few days.

With three players on debut – hooker Nathan Kirk, Cyril (CJ) Hooton in the centre and Gavin Taulo on the wing – this was a good performance especially as pre-season training has been hampered by bad weather and as the side were unable to fit in any friendly games in advance of this first outing.

From the start Hunslet took the game to the opposition, refusing to let them settle, racing to a well-deserved 18-4 half time lead. First half tries went to half Bradley (Chaddy) Chadwick and a brace from powerful loose forward Tommy Lee Corke.

Second half scorers were Chaddy, crossing for two more tries to complete a hat trick of touch downs and CJ. Chaddy converted five of Hunslet’s tries to complete a fine performance from the stand off.

Hunslet Club Parkside were always in control of this game against plucky opponents who never gave up the fight. Dominant performances from the forward pack, making good yards up field on several occasions created time and space for half backs, hooker and loose forward to combine effectively, and provided the backbone every team needs to be able to play attractive rugby league football.

Coaches Carl Briggs and Tom Saunders were both very happy with the performance of the boys, as were the watching supporters. Carl pointing out that there’s room for a lot of improvement in the team.

Supporters Man of the Match went to Nathan Kirk and the Coaches gave out two awards – to Nathan again and to CJ. Tom was at pains to point out in making the presentations that although someone has to win the awards this was a genuine team performance.
